به canonical name گاهی CNAME یا CNAME record هم گفته میشه. این سیستمی برای ثبت نام دامنه هست همان DNS که در واقع تعیین می‌کنه نام دامنه، نام مستعار دامنه دیگه‌ای نباشه. با استفاده از یکسری مجموعه قوانین، CNAME از کامپیوتر هاست به نام دامنه واقعی ترجمه میشه و بعد به آدرس IP کامپیوتر ترجمه میشه.
به عنوان مثال یک هاست شبکه‌ای “myserver.com” باید سرویس FTP داشته باشه تا با استفاده از اسم متعارف “ftp.myserver.com” قابل دسترس باشه و یک وب سرور، با استفاده از اسم متعارف “www.myserver.com” در دسترس هست.
